Government plans to truncate post-grad courses to one year

Government plans to truncate post-grad courses to one year

New Delhi: The government plans to cut the duration of post-graduate (PG) degree courses from two years to one year. All streams, barring medicine, will have a shortened PG degree programme. At present, a PG degree in medicine takes three years to complete.
While the two-year courses will be condensed, but with the necessary ingredients, the government may toughen the admission criteria to allow entry only to the brightest graduates.
To begin with, PG in law (LLM) is being reviewed by a set of experts under the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The ministry of human resource development (HRD) has tasked the UGC to work out modalities to restructure the existing LLM from two years to one year, with selectivity in admission to attract the brightest graduates.
While there is debate among the ministry, the bar council and other stakeholders on how to go about it, the idea is being pushed by citing cases in other countries. “When it can happen in the US and the UK, then why not in India?’’ has been its logic. The ministry believes a shorter duration course will not only save crucial years for the students, but also attract more of them towards higher education and research.
“While the ministry is insisting on a shorter duration PG degree course, there is a view in the legal fraternity that the conventional processes in law cannot be concised in LLM. We are going to deliberate on this issue during a national consultation for reforms in legal education to be held this Saturday and Sunday in New Delhi,” said Priya Hingorani, vice president of the Supreme Court bar council.
Minister of state for HRD D Purandeswari made it clear that the proposal for PG law would be considered for other PG programmes as well. The UGC is holding consultations with the vice chancellors of the state and central universities in this regard.
“This proposal would be considered in respect of other post-graduate programmes of study which are amenable to restructuring without any compromise on the quality of education,” Purandeswari said.
At present, legal education is being imparted by 913 colleges recognised by the Bar Council of India and 14 national law universities established under various state laws.
While law minister M Veerappa Moily is himself on board with the HRD minister Kapil Sibal’s idea of reviewing the legal education, he doesn’t want to take a stand without the bar council on his side.
“One of the neglected areas of legal education in the country is post-graduate studies in law and research…We are looking for the prospects for national and international collaboration in improving the standards,” said Moily.

Faith in God reduces stress, says a university research

Faith in God reduces stress, says a university research

Having faith in God certainly helps! Researchers at the University of Toronto have found that believing in God can reduce stress and anxiety immensely. The result, published in Psychological Science, shows distinct brain differences between believers and nonbelievers.
Assistant psychology professor Michael Inzlicht, leader of the study, used a Stroop task, a psychological test that entailed hooking up participants to electrodes that measured their brain activity. The result showed that religious people were less afraid of facing the unknown or committing mistakes, says a report published in 7th Space.
Compared to non-believers, the religious participants in the study showed significantly less activity in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a portion of the brain that helps modify behaviour by signalling when attention and control are needed, usually as a result of some anxiety-producing event like making a mistake.
The stronger their religious zeal, the less their ACC fired in response to their own errors, and the fewer errors they made.
“You could think of this part of the brain like a cortical alarm bell that rings when an individual has just made a mistake or experiences uncertainty,” Inzlicht said in an interview to a health journal.
He added that religious people or even people who simply believe in the existence of God showed significantly less brain activity in relation to their own errors.
Many researchers agree that believers tend to be happier, healthier, less stressed than compared to atheists, drink and smoke less and better at creating strong marriages and family support.
Hailing this research, Beato, author of The Power of Prayer, Endurance and Truth said,” I believe my life is less stressful because my belief in God,” says Beato. “God has given me support, hope and peace of mind anytime I’ve needed it."

Investing in MBA programme can be risky, says a report

Investing in MBA programme can be risky, says a report

If you are thinking about investing your time and money on a MBA accreditation, be very careful in selecting the institute or your investment will get wasted.
The advice follows the release of rankings by the Chinese edition of Forbes magazine on April 19th.
As per reports published in local Chinese media, the ranking was based on a survey conducted in 45 domestic B-schools and mainly focused on the feedback of students who graduated in 2005 and 2009 – people who have now been working for five years and one year, respectively.
The list was topped by China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), which has topped the list third time consecutively.
The survey also found that MBA programmes offered in various Chinese B-schools have varied greatly in the past few years. While some B- schools have fared well this time around, the performance of others have deteriorated.
Talking about the importance of making the correct choice of the institute and programme to pursue MBA, Liu Ruiming, executive editor of the Chinese edition of Forbesm said,” In the mid- and long-term, investing in an MBA or EMBA education can achieve a good return, but only for those excellent programmes.”
Quoting an example, the magazine said graduates from CEIBS realised cumulative income growth over the five years that followed of 524,000 yuan.
The income growth rate was 116.7 per cent when comparing salary before and immediately after their MBA.
On the contrary, graduates from relatively weak business schools saw no obvious rise on salary.
However, there were cases when students had not recovered even the costs of their tuitions.
The survey was conducted on the basis of return on investment after five years. It also considered the first-year starting salary for graduates and the income growth rate after graduating.

New building policy for educational institutes in Gujarat

New building policy for educational institutes in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Soon, all existing or upcoming colleges and institutes for higher education running in commercial complexes or any such buildings will have to follow the new guidelines of the state government.
The government has planned to publish new General Development & Control Rules (GDCR) under the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act 1976, which is likely to be called 'building regulation act' for higher education institutes.
A highly placed source said, "With the help of new GDCR, the government aims to focus on the security, safety and convenience of the students studying in higher education institutes." Under the proposed GDCR, escape routes of the education institute for emergency evacuation must be at least 3 metres. Fire escape, sunshade roofs, etc should also be provided in the institutes. The source added that the new rules will also have specific provision for the Global Floor Space Index (GFSI) which will be almost parallel to the existing norms for the township policy rates.
"The premium is likely to be between 25% and 35% as per the addition of GFSI. The maximum allowed height for the institute is likely to be 70 metres only and the built-up area is likely to be around 45% in low-rise and 30% in case of high-rise,'' said the source.
The government is also working on the new GDCR rules and policy for hospitals, hotels, malls and multiplexes.
Recently, a presentation on the proposed policy change was made before chief minister Narendra Modi.
"The urban development department is working on all these policies simultaneously and will announce the final result possibly in the next few months,'' said the source.

Students' web design firm going great guns

Students' web design firm going great guns

BELGAUM: Their story is inspirational: four enthusiastic youngsters of the Gogte Institute of Technology (GIT-Belgaum) start their own little firm, dotCord IT Solutions, helped along by the college.

dotCord, a web designing firm, is doing well for itself. Sandeep Hegde and Manoj, who are behind the start-up, worked together on a website for IEEE GIT for a competition organized by IBM. The site drew much appreciation, and slowly crystallized into work.

"We began to think that we could start a firm based on our potential. And ever since, we haven't looked back," elaborated Sandeep. They were joined by Manav and Chinmay, and also put some interns to good use.

For the students, it's both a learning and earning experience. They design websites according to the requirements of clients, on the college campus itself. GIT has helped them by setting up an IT incubation centre, which encourages such extra-curricular activities.

The students have provided web solutions for small and medium-scale corporate companies -- locals as well as outsiders -- and have successfully designed over 40 websites so far. They also have some handsome projects in hand. "Initially, it was very difficult for us to get our first client. Entrepreneurs in Belgaum were generally looking towards Bangalore and Pune for web designers," said Sandeep, in his final year.

But, all that has changed. "Many entrepreneurs liked our job and are contacting us with projects," says Sandeep. And why is their work popular? He said they prefer to provide designs which are easy to operate technically, rather than making new and tough ones.

Prof Santosh Saraf, coordinator for IT incubation centre, said these students' attitude is an inspiration to the other students of the institute. They are also developed the site of an institute, he added.

Their firm won the `Best Student Entrepreneur Award' from TiE, the world's largest organization in fostering entrepreneurship, in 2009.

Top body will help commerce students find the right job

Mumbai: Are you a commerce graduate who is unable to find a job? Don’t worry. There is some help coming for you from the Indian Commerce Association.
The association is holding a talent search examination across the country to help the industry get efficient candidates.
The All India Commerce and Management Talent Search Examination, as it is called, will be held on June 6 at several centres across the country.
TA Shiware, the coordinator for the exams in Maharashtra said the scores of candidates would be sent to the industry.
“Such a move will help bridging the gap between the industry and academia,” said Shiware, also the principal of KPB Hinduja College of Commerce.
“The students will be graded according to the industrial needs. The curriculum is also framed in a different manner, by taking inputs from several courses.”
A workshop at Indore and Hyderabad was conducted to decide on the test format.
All final year undergraduates are eligible for the exams to confirm their compatibility with the industry needs.
The exam will be divided in to two parts. Part-I will include the basic knowledge of commerce and management and will carry 200 marks, whereas with 50 marks, part-II will test the candidates’ business communication and managerial skills.
Nihal Shah, a final year student from a college in Vile Parle, said, “We do not know how this particular exam will help us. Most of the commerce students are forced to take up some post-graduation course to add an extra degree to their profile to get a good job. Today just holding a BCom degree is not enough. You need an MBA or a CA in addition to your graduation. If this exam promises to land us a job immediately after graduation, then it is a welcome change.”

Book fair in Mumbai - A mecca for book lovers

Book fair in Mumbai - A mecca for book lovers

Mumbai:
The initial response to the ongoing book fair organised by Ashish Book Centre at Sunder Bai Hall, New Marine Lines, clearly indicates that Mumbai has no shortage of book aficionados.

With more than 2 lakh popular titles available under one roof at an 85% discount, it's appears to be the perfect place to stockpile books for the summer.
For instance, the India - Travel Guide (Lonely Planet) usually sold at Rs1,500 can be availed at a discounted price Rs500.

Worldwide best sellers and excellent works of reputed authors - reputed titles, which are normally priced at Rs500 and above, can be obtained here for just Rs50 and Rs100.

A comprehensive range of encyclopedias is also available at amazing discounts during the book fair, which is being held up to May 3, 2010 from 9.30 am. to 8.30 pm.
Book lovers can choose from a wide range of categories and subjects including advertising, architecture, art, beauty, cookery, computers, fashion, fiction, non-fiction, health, history, management, photography, sports, textiles, travels, and more.

There's also an extensive collection of children's books to keep youngsters occupied.

Damji Nishar, proprietor, Ashish Book Centre, who has been in the business for a decade, organising this exhibition at the same venue since the past several years, revealed that on the first day of the exhibition, he received feedback from more than 3,000 readers.

Five thousand plus books were sold on day one itself and the crowds increased substantially on weekends.

"These days, people are more health conscious, as the result of which most of books on health related topics are expected to be sold. There are more than 1 lakh books in each category. This exhibition is ideal for parents as the lowest prices enable them to buy many more of their children's favourite books in the minimum budget, thus enhancing intellectual potential and adding to happiness. It's a not to be missed opportunity to avail other great books at unimaginable prices. You can find a never before collection of books here at a never before price," he pointed out.
According to him, it is heart warming to see a generation hooked on the Internet, movies and television reaching out for books in both, fiction and non-fiction categories.

Instead of waiting to see the film version of a popular novel, a rising number of Mumbaikars have begun to buy, read and discuss the novel itself. Quality is another factor pulling in the crowds.

"Our book fairs at Sunderbai Hall have been rousing successes because people want to get the original book instead of a pirated copy. It takes a well-planned and equally well-executed fair with hefty discounts on popular books that are currently still on the top reading lists, to really pull in the serious book aficionados," he emphasised.

50% decline in Indian students opting for studies in Australia

50% decline in Indian students opting for studies in Australia

Chennai: Australia today said though Indian students opting for studies there has declined by 50% this year, but it is confident of "rebuilding the numbers" in the coming years.

"Statistics show a decline of around 50% at the current numbers. We are confident that in the longer term, we can rebuild the numbers," Australian high commissioner to India Peter Varghese told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar in Chennai.
"There is also reduction in number of international students coming to Australia. This is something to do with global economic environment and strengthening of the Australian dollar," he said.

On attacks on Indian students in Australia, Varghese said both the countries are engaged in constructive dialogue to resolve the issue.

Australia has taken many steps like increasing police resources and changing legislation to give police greater powers to tackle the problem, he said.
He pointed out that sentences given by courts in some cases were very strong and severe. "We have arrested over 70 persons involved in attacks and they are being dealt with," he said.

"Majority of international students in Australia, including Indian students, have a safe, positive and enjoyable experience in the country," Varghese claimed.

Temping tempting for fresh MBAs

Temping tempting for fresh MBAs

Mumbai: Campuses might be brimming with placements, but MBA student Ronak Solanki wasn’t lucky enough to find a job. Very few companies visited his institute in Mysore.

As he scouted all around Mysore and Bangalore for a decent job, his friend Arun Kumar, an engineering student, suggested an alternative with a temporary staffing firm in Bangalore.

Kumar knew that some temporary staffing firms were hiring. If they join the firms, Kumar and Solanki will work on project basis for IT, retail, and insurance companies, but will be on the payrolls of the staffing firms as temps.
The temp jobs will not only provide them with a salary of Rs8,000-10,000 per month and work experience, but also flexibility and exposure to different organisational cultures and processes.

Though recruitment across MBA and engineering campuses this year has been better compared to last year, students from tier II and III institutes are finding it tough to get jobs.

Hence, students like Solanki and Kumar are exploring options like temping, which sometime ago was not given much thought.

E Balaji, CEO of Chennai-based human resource solutions firm Ma Foi Management Consultants, says that earlier, job seekers had a strong preference for being on the payrolls of companiesthey would be working for. “But that attitude is gradually changing with people ready to join temping companies.”

Sometime ago, mostly arts, commerce or science graduates would join temping firms, but now engineering graduates and MBAs are joining as well, says Rajesh AR, vice-president of Bangalore-based staffing firm TeamLease Services.

Human resource consultant Anish Laikar says companies look for temps for functions like finance, administration, accounts, sales and data processing.
Starting salaries in temping can range from Rs6,000 in retail to Rs8,000-12,000 in insurance, IT and financial services.

Temping companies are seeing demand from India Inc surging by approximately 12% quarter on quarter. “We are witnessing growth. Hence we should be adding 10,000 temps per quarter,” says Sudhakar Balakrishnan, managing director of Adecco India, a Bangalore-based firm with 81,000 temps.

Rajesh says TeamLease would be looking at adding 2,000 temps per month to their current strength of 65,000.

Experts say the demand for temps is growing, as temping allows companies to save 10-15% of their manpower costs in areas like pensions, insurance, healthcare expenses and provident fund.

Moreover, for short-term projects, like the marketing of a new product, companies prefer having temps rather than adding more people to their payrolls.

“Moreover, in scenarios like these, where recovery is still slow, companies would prefer not to add to their manpower costs,” Rajesh says. “Thus, they would go for temps.”

Doors closed for ‘profit-oriented’ universities in India

Doors closed for ‘profit-oriented’ universities in India

Despite the Foreign Education Bill being passed in India, the University of Phoenix, the aggressively expanding Monash University of Australia, or Britain’s first private company-university BPP College of Professional Studies would not be permitted to set foot in the country. This is because India plans to shut its doors to the world’s public and private universities that operate for profit.
This has been mentioned by the Union Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry in the in the third restrictive clause of the Foreign Education Providers’ Bill. The other two conditions include forbidding foreign universities from repatriating funds to their home country and setting up a minimum corpus of US $11 million.
“We are not going to permit every foreign university to come in. For one, universities listed on any stock market as well as for-profit universities would not be allowed to set up campuses in India,” a senior official in the HRD ministry told a leading daily.
Though the Cabinet has approved the bill, it is still not clear in what form are the universities planning to come to India. Some have only so far declared to setting up a research centre or starting joint programme, but so far there have been no talks of building up a campus in India.

“Not allowing for-profit colleges and universities would narrow the scope of institutes that can come in, but they are clearly in the education sector for financial gain and we are not very comfortable in allowing such players,” added the HRD official.

Experts around the world say it’s difficult to separate the for-profit universities from the private ones in countries where government supervision is unclear. Also there is no specific count of such universities so far.
“How do you differentiate the not-for-profit from the under-the-table for-profit institutes? And India should know this is a tough zone,” said Philip Altbach, director of the Center for International Higher Education, Boston College.

Skills for being a relationship manager

Skills for being a relationship manager

Swati Gandhi had always wanted to join the banking sector. “When I was in Class XI, I was fascinated with the work profile of bankers, and was impressed by the respect they get from their customers,” says this relationship manager (RM) with Axis Bank.
Gandhi, who joined the bank 10 months ago, after completing her MBA (finance), feels that the job is giving her everything she ever wanted. “I started off as an NRI RM and was also handling forex. It’s interesting being an RM as you get to meet a lot of people. You are part of the chain that makes and maintains relationships with the customers on behalf of the bank,” she says.

What Gandhi likes about her job is that her profile is very well defined. “As an RM you have to do field as well as desk work, which gives you a taste of both the worlds. Because of this, the growth prospects here are tremendous,” she says.
Different banks have different profiles for RMs. However, some of the common profiles are: If you are an acquisition manager, you have to acquire clients and focus on fieldwork to get business for your branch. As a service relationship manager, you have to sit in office and resolve the problems that the customers of your branch have. You also try to sell the bank’s products and services to the customers — new or old.

Another benefit of working for a bank is that promotions are frequent. If your performance is good, then you can be promoted from the post of RM to that of a manager in two to three years.

“It is a performance-driven field. If someone comes to you with a problem, then you should have the capability to solve it within a specific time period or else explain to the customers the various ways in which or s/he can get it solved,” says Gandhi.
With promotions come salary hikes. Then you get incentives on completion of targets, which is in excess of your monthly salary or cost to company (CTC).

The toughest part of the job is that you have to have loads of patience. You might encounter impatient/angry customers — some of them might have high expectations when it comes to service delivery and will demand quick solutions to problems. “If you give them a good hearing and manage to placate them, or solve their problems, then you can be sure you have won their loyalty for your bank. This is the time when your mental capabilities are tried and tested,” says Surinder Khanna, RM with a reputable bank in Delhi. “Fitness also counts as you may have to spend a lot of time out in the field. Building a rapport with your customer is important as you might have to meet him or her again and again,” says Surinder.

What’s it about?
Relationship managers or RMs look after the administration of a bank branch. They also look after the direct sales associates (DSA) and direct sales team (DST). Checking files, forming DSA teams, training people, making DSAs aware of various policies of the bank, creating relationships with customers are some responsibilities that RMs share. They also take feedback about DSAs and DSTs from customers. They have to ensure that a bank’s services are topnotch, making a customer feel safe and pampered
Clock Work
8:30 am: Leave home
9:30 am: Reach office
10 am: Brief DSAs and DSTs; fix targets for the day
11 am: Check files (loan), check CASA files (current account, saving account)
11:30 am: Process files
12 pm: Check Credit Investigation Bureau of India Limited (CIBIL) rating
1:30 pm: lunch
2:30 pm: Follow up on the credit team files
4-6 pm: Check files for the day, taking reports from DSAs and DSTs
6:30 pm: Leave office
The Payoff
. Relationship Manager: Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 a month
. Branch Manager: Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 a month
. District Manager: Rs 55,000 to Rs 65,000 a month
. Regional Manager (AVP): Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh a month
. VP (North, East, West, South): Sky is the limit
Skills
. Good administrative skills
. Good communication and presentation skills
. Sound knowledge of product
. Networking capabilities
. Good at strategising

How do i get there?
Taking up maths or commerce at the plus-two level helps. A BBA degree at the graduation level will make it easy for you to handle the job. Some banks promote executives to RM, some directly recruit MBA freshers for the post of RM. However, many banks will only take candidates with an MBA degree
Pros & cons
. Money is good in this profession
. Good work culture
. You get to interact with interesting people/customers
. Long working hours
. Stressful job

Sibal asks IIMs not to hike fees

Sibal asks IIMs not to hike fees

BAGALORE: Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal has asked the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) not to hike the fees.

While interacting with the Chairman of the board of directors of the nine IIMs, Sibal said that the fee for the IIMs' flagship Post-Graduate Management Programme hurt the students coming from middle class families.

He opined that governance issues are a 'roadblock' in efficient functioning of IIMs and to chalk out a multi-pronged strategy on improving governance, enhancing resource generation.

"So IIMs, we believe, should be sourcing money from outside, from those who have passed through the system, - the alumni, sourcing money from business community, from industry. And how that is to be done, another loop has been setup to tell that," said Sibal.

"It is very difficult for academics to do this. We need some professional institutional management, how this is to be done. We have the strategy and look what should be done in near future," he added.

IIM-Ahmedabad, the top ranked of the nine IIMs, has hiked the fee sharply for the two-year course, from Rs 1.25 million to Rs 1.37 million.

The fee was hiked after the IIMs raised the intake, due to implementation of the Other Backward Class (OBC) quota.
